MyShift: how MyWhoosh virtual shifting works

By mattapps · Published 12 October 2026 · Last checked 12 October 2026

MyShift is MyWhoosh's virtual shifting system. It gives you 30 virtual gears, and every ride starts in gear 15. On a computer you shift up with I and down with K. You can also shift from the MyWhoosh Link app on your phone.

What is MyShift in MyWhoosh?

MyShift is the name MyWhoosh gives to its virtual shifting. Instead of moving a chain across physical cogs, you change a gear number inside the game, and the game treats that number as your current gear.

MyWhoosh describes it on an official page called "MyShift: MyWhoosh's virtual shifting explained". Every fact about MyShift itself on this page comes from there. Where we are reasoning rather than quoting, we say so.

The core facts are short. There are 30 virtual gears. A ride starts in gear 15. You can shift from the keyboard or from the MyWhoosh Link companion app.

How many gears does MyWhoosh have, and where do you start?

MyWhoosh has 30 virtual gears, and a new ride starts in gear 15. Gear 15 sits in the middle of the range, so you can move in either direction from the first pedal stroke.

The page gives gear numbers, not gear ratios. We do not know what gear 1 or gear 30 corresponds to in terms of chainring and cog sizes, so we will not guess.

Which keys do you use to shift up and down in MyShift?

Press I to shift up and K to shift down. These are the keys named on the official MyShift page.

Think of the gears as a numbered scale from 1 to 30. The official page names the keys but does not spell out how far one press moves you, or what happens if you hold a key down, so watch the gear number in the game as you press.

Shifting is only part of what the keyboard does in MyWhoosh. For steering, emotes and the interface, see the MyWhoosh keyboard shortcuts guide.

Can you shift from the MyWhoosh Link app?

Yes. The official MyShift page says you can shift with the controls in the MyWhoosh Link app, the companion app for iOS and Android.

Besides shifting, MyWhoosh Link is described as the place for your account, events, chat, a live ride dashboard and stats. It is a useful option when your computer's keyboard is out of reach from the bike.

If you would rather keep Link for the dashboard and use a separate set of buttons for shifting, a phone can also send the I and K keys to your computer. GearPad, our own Android app, does that over Bluetooth. The steps are in how to shift gears in MyWhoosh from an Android phone.

What does having 30 gears mean in practice?

More gears usually mean smaller jumps between them. With 30 steps to choose from, each shift can change the effort by less than it would on a system with only a handful of gears. That would let you settle on a cadence you like without overshooting.

Starting in the middle also has a practical effect. Gear 15 leaves 15 gears above you and 14 below, so a climb or a sprint does not begin with you already at a limit.

How big each step really feels depends on how MyWhoosh maps a gear to resistance or speed, and on your trainer. Neither is stated on the official page, so treat the paragraph above as a reasonable expectation and not a measurement.

What do we not know about MyShift?

The official MyShift page does not say which trainers you need, and it does not publish gear ratios. We are not going to fill those gaps with guesses.

  • Trainer requirements. Which trainers work with MyShift, and whether a smart trainer is needed, is not stated on the page we used.
  • Gear ratios. The page gives 30 gears but not the ratio behind each one.
  • Key rebinding. We could not confirm whether you can change I and K to other keys.
  • Step size and held keys. The page does not say how far one press moves you or what holding a key does.

MyWhoosh can change features between versions. Check the official page and the game's own settings for current details, and if anything here disagrees with the game, trust the game.

How does MyShift relate to other trainer modes?

Virtual shifting is one idea among several that control how a trainer behaves while you ride. This page covers only the MyShift side, and we do not describe how it interacts with ERG or simulation settings because the official page does not.

For the general difference between shifting, ERG and sim mode, read virtual shifting vs ERG vs SIM mode.

Quick answers

Do I need an extra app or device to use MyShift?

No. MyShift is built into MyWhoosh, and the keyboard's I and K keys or the MyWhoosh Link app are enough to shift. Other tools only add another way to press those keys.

Is gear 15 the easiest or the hardest gear?

Neither. The official page says rides start in gear 15 out of 30, which puts you around the middle of the range. We do not know the exact ratio behind that number.

Does MyShift work with any trainer?

We do not know. The official MyShift page does not state trainer requirements, so check MyWhoosh's documentation or support for your specific trainer.

Is the MyWhoosh Link app available on both iPhone and Android?

MyWhoosh describes Link as a companion app for iOS and Android. It covers your account, events, chat, a live ride dashboard, stats and MyShift controls.
